Cheltenham Town Women qualify for the second round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after a 2-0 away win against Millwall Lionesses.
Goals from Libby Bell and Emily Owen see us in the hat for the second-round draw.
First Half:
Goalkeeper Charlotte Haynes was called into action early on after an energetic start, saving Kayda Townsend’s effort from close range.
However, Cheltenham were the side to open the scoring just after the 10-minute mark, the Robinesses taking the lead through another set piece.
Bell, for the second week in a row, scored straight from a corner, her effort on the right-hand side looping in over Gmiterek in goal.
Bella Hall did well to get a cross in on the right-hand side, Guymira’s acrobatic effort rolling just wide of the post.
Hall then hit the post after Guymira played her in, the two strikers proving to be a threat for Millwall.
Cheltenham still had to be careful, however, Throp’s pinpoint corner unable to be converted at the near post.
Haynes was called into action again, racing out to clear a ball before Townsend could get on the end of it.
The away side then hit the woodwork twice, Newns’ poked effort deflecting behind, before skipper Emily Owen’s effort from long range hit the bar.
Just before the half-time break, Hall had not one, but two, efforts cleared off the line.
Second Half:
Much like the first half, Cheltenham started positively and scored early on.
Skipper Owen met Bell’s corner and headed home powerfully from close range to double the Robinesses’ lead.
Despite the two-goal advantage, Millwall kept pressing Haynes, with the goalkeeper producing another impressive save to deny Townsend.
The forward found herself free in the area, her effort turned behind somehow by the goalkeeper, as she got down low extremely quickly to preserve her clean sheet.
Newns was the next to try and add another to the scoreline, denied well by Gmiterek on the spin.
Anais Trinci also had a few efforts on goal, but couldn’t convert from close range.
The game fizzled out in the closing stages, Cheltenham comfortably holding onto their 2-0 lead.
The draw for the second round of the competition will take place on Monday evening, at 7pm, and will be live streamed on YouTube by both TNT Sports and the official Adobe Women’s FA Cup channel.
Another away trip to Gwalia United midweek rounds out the month for the Robinesses, before they host Lewes as focus quickly returns to league action.
