Cheltenham Town Women make it four wins in a row with a strong 4-0 win against Birmingham City Under-21’s in the FAWNL League Cup.
Goals from Issy Newns, Courtney Jones, Una Lue and Louise Guymira gave Cheltenham all three points.
The result means Tom Davies’ side are still top Group F in the newly formatted Cup, which also features Worcester City Women and Kidderminster Harriers Women.
First Half:
Cheltenham opened the scoring early on through Newns, who took aim from the edge of the area, her strike nestling into the bottom left-hand corner to give the Robinesses a 1-0 leadwithin the opening 10-minutes.
Birmingham City had a chance to level the game from the penalty spot, Emily Fitzpatrick hitting the post from 12 yards after Emily Owen was penalised for a handball.
But, not long after, Jones doubled Cheltenham’s lead, heading home after meeting Libby Bell’s corner.
Lue had an opportunity for a third despite the visitors piling on the pressure, cutting in on the left-hand side, before unleashing a powerful effort that fell just wide of the right post.
Cheltenham went into the break with a two goal advantage.
Second Half:
Lue was proving a handful for the young Blues defence, her first effort of the second half flying just wide of the near post after beating Nadyne Da Silva for pace.
Meg Arnott then tried an ambitious effort from 40 yards, seeing Felgate off her line, but the effort didn’t trouble the young keeper in the end.
As Cheltenham were pushing for a third, Lue met Emma Congrave’s cross, but her effort was tame and easily held by Felgate.
The striker then saw her effort smash against the bar from long range, before Amelie Curtis won the ball back in the final third, her driven effort narrowly wide in a period of dominance from the home side.
Charlotte Haynes was called into action, producing a great save to deny Lucy Powis in a one-on-one as Birmingham looked for a route back into the game.
However, Lue finally got her goal just before the hour mark, running in behind before slotting her effort into the bottom right-hand corner.
Substitute Guymira then got a fourth mere minutes after coming on.
Guymira picked the ball up inside her own half before charging up the pitch and unleashing a powerful effort, which zipped past the grasp of Felgate to give the Robinesses a strong four-goal lead.
The woodwork was rattled yet again by another substitute, Casi Evans, her free kick rebounding off the bar.
Haynes was called into action yet again with the 90-minute mark approaching, this time a high diving catch to keep her clean sheet intact.
The game finished 4-0 to Cheltenham, which sees them retain top spot in Group F with one more game in the Group against Kidderminster Harriers on Sunday, September 28.
Next up for Tom Davies’ side is a visit from Watford, as league action returns to Kayte Lane. Tickets are available to buy in advance here.
