Midfielder Greenwood Signs

Cheltenham Town Women FC are delighted to announce Loughborough Lightning’s Doris Greenwood as their fifth summer signing.

Greenwood joins the Robinesses alongside Lacy-Jai Liggett from Oxford, Libby Bell from Bristol Rovers, Abbey Hateley, also from Loughborough, and Lilly Wellesley-Davies from Southampton Women’s FC.

Despite moving from the Midlands, the young midfielder has already felt very welcome within her new group of teammates. Speaking to Gloucestershire Live, she spoke highly of her new environment: “It’s been so nice, the girls have been so friendly! It’s really competitive at training too which I really like.”

After having spent some time within Bristol City’s academy and spending time within Cheltenham Town Women’s youth system, Greenwood’s time in Leicestershire was most notable, making 18 starts as Lightning missed out on promotion to Tier Three on goal difference, losing out to Sporting Khalsa in the FA WNL Division One Midlands.

“It was a difficult season to take in the end, I’ve learned a lot though from it. I’m looking forward to taking those experiences into this season,” Greenwood said.

Alongside Greenwood making the move from Loughborough, is wingback Hateley who signed for Cheltenham last week.

Being alongside a familiar face was helpful in making the transition: “Abbey’s my best friend. We said towards the end of last season that we’d like to stick together, so Cheltenham’s been able to do that for us.”

Greenwood is already counting down the days to the start of the new season, which sees the Robinesses host Plymouth Argyle on Sunday 18 August (2:00pm kick-off).

“We (Loughborough) missed out on that opportunity to play in tier three last season, so we’re at this level now and I’m ready for whatever happens.”

Manager Tom Davies was elated to secure his fifth addition, commenting “Doris is a fantastic signing for us!

“She’s someone who links play fantastically well providing an option to build and progress while being the instigator to create chances to finish.

“She suits our style with how aggressive she is and tempo she plays the game at and we’re delighted she’s returned home.”
