PREVIEW: Gwalia United Away

February 11, 2025

Cheltenham Town Women will be looking to seal another crucial league win as they make the short trip to Newport to face Gwalia United on Wednesday night (7:45pm kickoff).

The Robinesses bounced back from defeat over Oxford nine days ago, as they comfortably beat Billericay 3-0 at Kayte Lane. An early opener 15 minutes in from the captain Emily Owen started the scoring, whilst a quick-fire brace from Una Lue gave Tom Davies’ side a 3-0 lead at the interval, a lead they kept till full time. The goals from Lue means she now has an impressive return of 14 goals in all competitions so far this campaign.

Since November, Cheltenham have had a fantastic run of form, with nine wins in their last twelve matches. This game marks the 26th game of their season too, eclipsing last season’s total, with six league games, a County Cup group stage match and a Women’s National League Plate Final still guaranteed to come, which promises to be an exciting end to an already historic season for Davies’ side.

The Robinesses make the trip to a Gwalia United side who in recent weeks have sealed some crucial points in the relegation battle. After gaining three points back off Billericay Town after the latter fielded an ineligible player for their league match earlier in the season, Gwalia got a vital point over high flying Exeter City, and beat MK Dons.

A defeat over Watford leaves James Thomas’ side currently in 9th on 15 points, two points clear of Billericay Town who occupy the last relegation spot. Cheltenham sit a place above Gwalia in 8th on 17 points, and five points off Lewes with a game in hand.

Back in September, both sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at a soaking Kayte Lane. Doris Greenwood and Una Lue opened the scoring but Gwalia pegged it back through Ellie Sargent and Kylie Nolan.

Next up for Cheltenham is the return of the Gloucestershire County Cup as we take on Pucklechurch Sports on Sunday February 16. A point would be enough to seal progression to the semi-finals of the competition. After that, the Robinesses round off the month with the visit of Watford to Kayte Lane on Sunday February 23.

The game is being played at Newport Stadium, NP19 4PT. Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for Over 65’s, and £2 for Under 18s. Cheltenham supporters can be purchase their tickets on the gate, or in advance here.
